The question that has haunted humanity since the dawn of time is “Why is cake so good for you?” The belief is that as we eat food, we unconsciously give it a meaning. Cake, or the slice, may symbolize shame, or it may represent a reward, or it may simply be a meaningless gesture of good will. Whatever the reason, a slice of dark rich chocolate cake on a special occasion can give an impression that says “You are loved.”
For me, a lifelong vegan, when I hear those words “Happy Birthday,” I think of the sadness of having to eat animal flesh over again. Or hearing those words “Happy Holidays,” I imagine someone cringing at the thought of eating cookies or cake. A slice of dark, rich chocolate cake, though, says “Cheese, cakes, and presents are a happy memory!” Those two very different concepts alone have caused me to grow a vegan lifestyle.
Though I am aware that the question “What is the best tasting dessert?” is more complicated than a slice of delicious dark chocolate cake, I decided to answer the question. After some research, I discovered that though there are many answers to the question, “Why is cake so good for you?” there is one answer that I will always stand by.
It’s all about the crust! If you dig into a freshly made chocolate cake, you’ll find that it is covered in chocolate shavings. That’s because most chocolate cakes are handmade and baked by individuals with the sole purpose of sharing their creative process. There is a certain joy in sharing your love of baking by making delicious desserts, and chocolate cake is no exception.
As far as why is cake so good for you, the answer has to do with the health benefits. When I ate a well-executed, homemade birthday cake recipe with a slice of fresh fruit, I felt like I was indulging in an unpasteurized, organic dessert. My doctor agrees that eating chocolate on a regular basis can reduce the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. Those same health benefits can be experienced by eating a raw, unsweetened chocolate cake every now and again. The flavor can vary from dark chocolate to nutty chocolate, and the frosting can be just as yummy! The only way to experience all the delicious taste is to eat a delicious, raw chocolate cake!
I’ve often thought, why is cake so good for you? Because I couldn’t imagine living life without it. After I ate a delicious chocolate cake, I immediately felt hungry again. I needed something sweet to calm me down after the stress of the day. I would often grab a slice of cake in the comfort of my own home, because I knew that it would help keep me calm. Some of the best recipes I have found online can be found at Handle the Heat by a lovely lady named Tessa.
One of the reasons why I love to eat cake is that it offers me so many healthy options. A quick search of a healthy chocolate cake will show you that the only traditional recipe I could find is a chocolate cake with a Wham Bar added to it. A Wham Bar is basically a powdered sugar with a little bit of cream that you add to your coffee or tea. While there are many different brands of Wham Bars, I prefer one brand called Xocai. It’s very tasty, has no artificial ingredients and comes in many delicious flavors including Mint, Coconut, Chai and Chocolate.
What’s more, the chocolate in the cake provides me with antioxidants, which can help me fight off the bad cholesterol in my arteries. Plus, the extra cocoa in the chocolate cake really wakes me up in the morning. I love to eat chocolate cake during the week when I feel sleepy and need some extra energy. Another benefit of eating chocolate cake is that it is high in protein, which helps me maintain my energy during the day. If you are looking for a good reason to stop eating cakes altogether, then I can honestly say that this one really makes me want to kick myself for not getting more chocolate into my diet sooner! So, what are you still waiting for?
